Straight Talk and Action on the Sexual Harassment of Development Officers and Fundraisers
Let's talk about the often taboo subject of the common occurrence of sexual harassment of development officers.
Data shows that women of color are more likely to encounter harassment than other people.
We are welcoming two Ohio State Professors and Researchers, Erynn Beaton and Megan LaPere-Schloop who have done the most recent and comprehensive study of this crisis. We will also hear from Somos members about their experiences. This will be an empowering discussion to validate our experiences, empower our fundraisers, especially our mujeres. We will talk about practices to help prevent and how to deal with this as a fundraiser and a leader of fundraisers.
This is hosted by Somos El Poder, the first Latinx Fundraising Institute but all fundraisers and nonprofit leaders, including Board Members are welcome.

Armando Enrique Zumaya is the Founder of Somos El Poder, a veteran fundraiser with 36 years of experience. He lectures internationally on fundraising in the US, Mexico and the UK. He lectures and writes about the Latinx experience in the nonprofit world. His work includes direct experience raising five, six and seven figure gifts from Latinx in the US. He is an active development officer. He has spent the bulk of his fundraising career as a Major Gift, Leadership Gifts and Annual Fund Officer on two $1+ billion dollar campaigns at Cornell University and the University of California, Berkeley. He has served in the Vice President of Development, Director of Major Gifts and Chief Development Officer, Annual Fund and Leadership Gift roles. He is well known for his work in teaching prospecting, solicitation, cold calling, Latino Major Giving techniques and remote constituency fundraising. He is a well reviewed speaker.

Megan LePere-Schloop is an assistant professor in the John Glenn College of Public Affairs at The Ohio State University. She uses machine learning, qualitative methodologies, and language (organizational mission statements, people’s descriptions of their experiences, etc.) to understand the iterative relationships between human interpretations, behavior, and broader social structures. She holds an MPA and PhD from the University of Georgia. |

Erynn Beaton is an associate professor in the John Glenn College of Public Affairs at The Ohio State University. She studies the ways in which the nonprofit sector and its organizations reflect, combat, and sometimes reproduce structural inequalities. She holds a PhD from the University of Massachusetts Boston in Organizations & Social Change and an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. |

Andrea Salazar, Vice President of Advancement & External Affairs at Wellnest. Andrea Salazar is responsible for overseeing all development activities for the organization in addition to raising awareness for Wellnest’s innovative initiatives and programs throughout Los Angeles County. A highly creative, results-driven, professional, Andrea has over 18 years’ experience in development and is skilled in cultivating strategic partnerships to secure funding for some of Los Angeles’ leading non-profit organizations. Before coming to Wellnest, Andrea held key leadership positions in fundraising and development for Olive Crest, the Whole Child, Boy Scouts of America, and Good Shepard Center for Homeless Women and Children. Andrea’s drive and passion for service comes from a desire to use her skills, personal experience, and influence to make a difference in the lives of underserved communities – in particular at-risk youth and children who have been in foster care. Andrea received her Bachelor of Science in Business with an Emphasis on Organizational Management, from the University of La Verne. She also received a Certificate in Nonprofit Management from the Center of Nonprofit. She also serves on the Board of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Greater Los Angeles and serves on the Figueroa Corridor Board. |
